When the Wilmington Greyhounds made it to Hershey last year to play for a state title, they got there running the ball. In order to do that you have to have a good offensive line. The Greyhounds had just that and more. Led by Colton Richards, the Hounds piled up over 4,000 yards on the ground. This year they’re on pace to match or beat that with a title run. After that title run, Colton hit the camp tour, talked to many teams and worked hard during the off season to find a home after high school. Navy football was the first D1 school to jump on board in May. Not long after the offers started rolling in, seven coming in May alone. Navy, RMU, Duquesne, Notre Dame College, Richmond, Umass, Albany, Fordham, St Francis, Delaware and Slippery Rock all made a play for him. The 6-2, 270 pound Richards committed to RMU on October 16.
We asked him about his decision:
WPA: why did you choose to commit to RMU?
Colton: I chose RMU because it was the best fit for me and my family.
WPA: who was your biggest influence at RMU, who recruited you?
Colton: Coach Tyler recruited me the hardest along with meeting Coach Tolentino, Coach Plungas, and Coach Clark it really sealed the deal meeting them.
WPA: what do your parents think of your decision?
Colton: My parents are super excited with my decision because it allows me to play D1 football and it also allows them to come to games and not have to pay for my schooling.
WPA: what are they getting in player like you?
Colton: They get everything they need out of me as a player. They get my heart, tenacity, relentlessness, and my motor. While getting a guy off the field who is respectful and very hardworking in the classroom.
WPA: what position will you play?
Colton: They plan on playing me at DT, but I could definitely see them moving me from there to DE, MLB, and even as a blocking back at times.
WPA: why commit early?
Colton: I committed early because I found the school that best fit me and my family.
WPA: what was the recruiting process like for you?
Colton: The recruiting process was long and I didn’t really like it. It’s all due to size not skill and that’s all that some schools look for.
WPA: Do you know what you’d like to study?
Colton: I plan on studying business or sports management.
WPA: What do you think is the most exciting thing about RMU?
Colton: I think the most exciting thing will be coming in and getting the opportunity to play right off the bat.
WPA: How will this affect your play for the rest of your senior season?
Colton: This doesn’t affect my play it allows me to gain even more focus on the task at hand and hammer out these last playoff games and make a run with my boys.
